Google+ beats Twitter in popularity

Google has once again proven that you should never question them when they break into a new market.
Many have wondered if Google+ will actually catch on after the initial hype, and now they have proven that using their main page for advertisement has paid off.

Global Web Index released a report showing a change in the usage of social networks like Facebook, Google+ and Twitter.
Twitter, while surpassed by Google+ in terms of users, had the strongest growth at 40%. Twitter has now garnered 21% of the global internet users. A whopping 51% use Facebook, which is a large lead over Google+ at 25%. Twitter is tied with YouTube in the third position.

That means there's about 343 million active users of Google+, and a little under 300 million active users for Twitter and YouTube. Facebook has been able to combat what GWI called “Facebook fatigue” and saturation and achieve about 33% growth. Based on the markets surveyed and estimates of other markets not included in their report, GWI believes that Facebook’s 1 billion user claim is more or less on target.

The clear winner in all this is Google+, who grew 27%. When coupled with YouTube, Google’s has proven to have wide appeal and it also vindicates Google’s annoying service coupling.
While major western players have increased in market share, smaller/local social networks in various other countries have seen major decline in active users. This especially has been seen in China due to
growing pushes to require users give their real names and phone numbers. In addition, people in China have been adopting the use of blogs and forums which provides a perception of a little more privacy.

Another major reason for dominance of larger global social networks are mobile apps that are generally more polished. Google again wins here with the ever growing Android presence in the smartphone market.
