Nintendo is now expecting to sell only 4 million Wii U's in the current financial year, down from a previous estimate of 5.5 million, describing it as "a somewhat negative surprise".
The original Wii was a good bargain compared to other consoles when it launched in 2006, but Wii U now has a large variety of smartphones and tablets to compete with in the gaming space.
The Wii also launched with marketing and game titles that showed off the new controllers, while the Wii U is trying to convince people that it now also has features (like proper internet connectivity) that its competitors had years ago.

Nintendo sold more than 3 million Wii U's between November and December, so a modest forecast of 4 million during the next 12 months really does look like Nintendo is very afraid of what Microsoft and Sony will bring out for the next holiday season.
Either that or Nintendo is behind schedule on their first party games, as game sales are predicted to be only 16 million this year, down from 24 million.
Nintendo's estimate for this year's sales of the 3DS device however has has been lowered from 17.5 million to 15 million, which is luckily for them still beating Sony's brand new Playstation Vita, at 10 million.[The Guardian]
